Authorities continue to investigate the crash of a light aircraft at Hanningfield Reservoir, located near Chelmsford in Essex. The incident occurred shortly after 2:00 pm on Sunday when the plane was seen entering the water. Essex Police have maintained a presence at the scene while working alongside the Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB) to examine the circumstances surrounding the crash.
The reservoir and nature reserve have been closed off to the public, with police cordons restricting access to the area as part of the ongoing inquiry. Although no official details about casualties have been disclosed, emergency services, including fire engines, ambulances, and a helicopter, responded promptly when the crash was first reported. Local resident Richard Elkins recounted witnessing the emergency response and described the somber atmosphere, saying, “It’s very sad to think that a plane had come down.”
Regarding the flight, it is understood that the aircraft departed from North Weald and was en route to Southend Airport. The crash took place roughly ninety minutes after takeoff. In the wake of the accident, individuals who may have captured relevant footage through CCTV or dashcams have been encouraged by Chief Superintendent Waheed Khan to come forward and assist investigators with their inquiries.
Hanningfield Reservoir spans approximately 870 acres (352 hectares) and is managed by Essex and Suffolk Water.
