Mum's 27-year wait for return of global explorer son Karl Bushby

Karl Bushby embarked on an extraordinary journey 27 years ago, departing from his hometown of Hull with the ambitious goal of walking 36,000 miles (58,000 km) around the world without using any form of transport. Initially, he expected the expedition to last 12 years. Now, as he approaches Austria and prepares to complete the final leg of his adventure, Karl hopes to return to Hull in September 2026, where his mother Angela, whom he calls his biggest supporter, will eagerly await his arrival.

Angela, 75, remains firmly rooted in their family home on Hull’s Sutton Park estate, surrounded by mementos of her son’s incredible odyssey. “I’ll be here,” she says, recalling how she is determined to greet Karl not at the Channel Tunnel but back at the house, ready to give him a warm hug. Since Karl set off from Chile in November 1998, geopolitical challenges, war, and difficulties in obtaining visas have slowed his progress. Despite these setbacks, the family is now looking forward to a long-anticipated reunion.
