Jojo Moyes has opened up about how the late Sophie Kinsella motivated her to finish writing the acclaimed novel *Me Before You*. During an appearance on BBC Radio 4’s *Desert Island Discs*, Moyes shared that she was on the verge of abandoning the project after only completing 20,000 words. It was Kinsella’s encouragement that ultimately pushed her to continue, leading to the book’s tremendous global success and its 2016 film adaptation starring Emilia Clarke and Sam Claflin.
Moyes revealed that her decision to nearly stop working on the novel came during a difficult period in her life, marked by financial struggles and disappointment over limited success in her writing career. She recalled a lunch meeting with Sophie Kinsella, where she confided in her friend about the incomplete manuscript. Kinsella’s response was firm and supportive: “You have to write this book, you do know that? You have to write this book.” Further reinforcing this encouragement, Kinsella’s husband Henry later reached out to Moyes, echoing the advice for her to keep going.
*Me Before You* centers around Louisa Clark, a young woman from a working-class background who becomes the caregiver for Will Traynor, a wealthy man left paralyzed after a motorcycle accident. Moyes has explained that the book was inspired by a real-life news story of a young rugby player who was quadriplegic and whose parents took him to a clinic in Switzerland for assisted dying. Despite her initial uncertainty about the book’s impact, Moyes said, “I knew I loved this book and I knew it was the best version of itself that it could be, but I had no idea it was going to resonate in the way that it did.”
Sophie Kinsella, whose real name was Madeleine Sophie Wickham, was diagnosed with an aggressive brain cancer in 2022 and passed away earlier this month at the age of 55. Her support during a critical time in Moyes’s career is fondly remembered by the author, who spoke of her deep admiration for Kinsella for many reasons, including her pivotal belief in this novel
