The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has announced two amber health warnings affecting certain areas of England as cold weather approaches the start of the new year. Specifically, these alerts apply to the North East and North West regions and will be in effect from 8:00 pm GMT on Sunday until noon on January 5th. The warnings highlight a potential increase in mortality rates, especially among elderly and vulnerable populations.
Forecasts predict temperatures in these parts of England could drop as low as -4°C, with snowfall expected in the North West on January 3rd and 4th. The UKHSA has cautioned that such cold conditions may place additional strain on health and care services. In northern Scotland, temperatures are anticipated to fall even further, reaching approximately -6°C, while Penrith may experience lows around -1°C overnight into Monday.
Additional concerns include indoor temperatures in hospitals and care homes potentially falling below recommended thresholds for maintaining health safety. Maintaining indoor environments at the advised 18°C may prove difficult for some individuals during this period. The agency also anticipates possible staffing challenges caused by travel disruptions amid severe weather conditions. The Met Office has forecast mostly cloudy skies across much of England, with frost and fog patches creating potentially hazardous travel situations on Monday morning. Winds from the northwest may bring wintry showers to northern England and drizzle in the days leading up to New Year’s Day. From January 2nd to 11th, cold northerly winds are expected to dominate Scotland and move southward across the UK, bringing snow showers primarily along coastal areas, while central and southern inland regions will remain cold but largely dry.
Additionally, yellow cold health alerts have been issued for areas covering the East Midlands, West Midlands, South East, South West, East of England, Yorkshire and the Humber, and London. In these locations, temperatures are forecast to drop to highs around 6°C and lows below freezing starting from New Year’s Day. Dr Agostinho Sousa, who leads extreme events and health protection at UKHSA, emphasized the importance of checking in on vulnerable friends, family, and neighbors during this time. He warned that the cold weather could have serious health consequences, including a higher risk of heart attacks, strokes, and chest infections, particularly affecting those over 65 years old and individuals with existing health conditions. Similar cold health alerts and weather warnings were also issued on Christmas Day, resulting in the cancellation of several traditional open water swimming events
