Couple's Christmas Love Actually-style Woolton Cinema proposal

Jacob Molloy chose a memorable way to propose to his girlfriend of ten years, Lucy Agate, by taking advantage of the reopening of Liverpool’s oldest surviving cinema during the Christmas season. On Christmas Eve, the couple attended a sold-out screening of *It’s a Wonderful Life* at the Woolton Picture House, a venue with special significance for them as it was where they had their first date. At the conclusion of the film, Jacob surprised Lucy by appearing on the big screen holding handwritten cue cards, inspired by a famous scene from *Love Actually*.

The 26-year-old then got down on one knee and asked Lucy to marry him, to which she tearfully said yes. The final cue card displayed the message, “She said yes,” perfectly capturing the joyous moment. This thoughtful proposal was organized in collaboration with the staff at the Woolton Picture House, a historic cinema that first opened its doors in 1927. After closing in 2020 due to the pandemic, the cinema briefly reopened for a seasonal Christmas film series before closing again for a planned refurbishment.

Jacob explained that the entire surprise was about three weeks in the making, though he had been considering engagement rings since late September. “I kind of had an idea of what I was going to do,” he said, adding that the reopening of the cinema for the 12 Days of Christmas screenings presented an ideal opportunity. He also praised the cinema staff for their helpfulness and creative input throughout the planning process. Originally, Jacob had considered proposing in the projection room to keep the moment intimate and old-fashioned. However, concerns about the room’s condition led to the idea of a video insertion during the film, which later shifted to the use of cue cards for a clearer and more charming message.

The inspiration to use placards came from *Love Actually*, which Jacob felt was fitting given the Christmas theme of the evening. “It just felt perfect and it was another Christmas film in keeping with the theme,” he said. Despite feeling nervous, Jacob was confident in Lucy’s response, and the proposal was met with joy and celebration from everyone present. Looking ahead, the couple plans to travel next year and are considering tying the knot by the end of 2026
