Two men are currently reported as missing off the coast of Devon following alerts about swimmers experiencing difficulty in the water, according to police. The emergency services were alerted at 10:25 GMT after concerns arose for individuals at Budleigh Salterton beach, triggering a large-scale response from rescue teams.
Authorities have confirmed that several people were safely rescued from the water. These individuals underwent medical checks either at the scene or in hospital as a precautionary measure. The police have also communicated with the next of kin of one missing man, while attempts continue to reach the family of a second man, with assistance from a local friend.
In an official statement, Devon and Cornwall Police emphasized the deployment of extensive emergency personnel to manage the situation and requested that the public refrain from entering the water for safety reasons. The Maritime and Coastguard Agency reported that Exmouth and Beer Coastguard Rescue teams, RNLI lifeboats from Exmouth and Torbay, coastguard search and rescue helicopters, alongside police and ambulance services, are all actively involved in the search and rescue operation.
Public safety warnings have been issued, urging people not to swim or enter the sea along this part of the coastline during the ongoing incident. Earlier on the same day, police advised against participation in the traditional Christmas Day swim at Exmouth while efforts were concentrated on the Budleigh Salterton emergency. Additionally, some Christmas and Boxing Day swim events in Devon and Cornwall were postponed or canceled due to a yellow weather warning for wind conditions
