Some South West festive swims cancelled due to wind warning

Due to a yellow weather warning for strong winds, organisers of several Christmas and Boxing Day swimming events in Devon and Cornwall have either postponed or cancelled their plans. The Met Office has issued a warning covering the South West region from 4:00 am until midnight on Christmas Day, predicting gusts reaching up to 65 mph. Additionally, the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has issued a yellow cold-health alert for the area.

In Cornwall, the annual Christmas Day swim in Coverack has been postponed for the first time in its 57-year history, with organisers citing dangerous weather conditions as the reason for the decision. Similarly, multiple Boxing Day swims scheduled in Devon have been called off as safety concerns take priority. The warning also extends to Somerset and a large part of Wales, where strong east to northeasterly winds are expected, with gusts frequently hitting 45-55 mph and up to 65 mph along exposed coastal areas. The Met Office also warns of hazardous large waves in these regions.

The organisers of the Coverack swim emphasised that holding the event in such conditions would be too risky, and so they have deferred it to New Year’s Day instead. The Start Bay Inn in Devon expressed regret over canceling its Boxing Day swim, stating on social media that the rough northeast wind made the conditions unsafe at Torcross. Likewise, RNLI Teignmouth announced its decision to cancel the Boxing Day sea walk, acknowledging the disappointment but highlighting that participant safety must come first.

The Royal Air Force Air Cadets 200 Squadron in Torquay also confirmed the cancellation of Torbay Council’s Boxing Day Dip at Torre Abbey. A statement from the council, shared by the squadron on social media, explained that the RNLI advised cancellation due to large swells and rough seas caused by easterly winds on Boxing Day. The organisers expressed understanding of any disappointment but stressed that ensuring everyone’s safety is paramount in making such decisions
