Over the weekend, two gun attacks targeted separate houses in north Belfast, incidents that a Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) assembly member has linked to the destructive influence of drug-related activities. Brian Kingston spoke to BBC News NI, emphasizing that those responsible must stop harassing local residents. One of the shootings occurred on Saturday night at a residence on Ainsworth Street, where children were present during the attack.
Police are treating this event with the highest level of seriousness. They are also investigating a related shooting that took place on Friday at a home on Woodvale Avenue, aiming to determine the motive behind both attacks. Although no physical injuries were reported among those inside the Ainsworth Street property, including the children, the building itself sustained damage, with a bullet hole visible in the living room window.
Kingston explained that the perpetrators are individuals from outside the immediate community and noted that such gunfire incidents have been uncommon in recent years. He condemned the presence of these harmful drug culture elements, urging them to leave locals alone. “It is horrific to think that in the very week of Christmas, these criminals were prepared to fire shots through the living room window,” he said. “It is entirely reckless. Those people are not wanted in this area.”
Ron McDowell, a councillor for Traditional Unionist Voice (TUV), expressed shock over the attacks, describing them as “unbelievable.” He highlighted widespread concern about gunmen roaming the streets and warned of the potential for fatal consequences. “Only for the grace of God we could have been looking at a fatality,” McDowell stated, urging a strong community-wide condemnation of any individuals who consider bringing firearms into the neighborhood. “If you are thinking of bringing guns onto these streets then you’ve no place in our community.”
