A provisional trial date has been arranged for a 15-year-old boy who stands accused of murdering nine-year-old Aria Thorpe. The teenager, whose name remains protected for legal reasons, has now appeared twice before a judge since the tragic discovery of Aria’s body at a residence in Weston-super-Mare earlier this week.
During the latest hearing at Bristol Crown Court, the defendant participated via video link from a youth detention center. He confirmed his identity but did not enter a plea. Judge Peter Blair KC scheduled a tentative trial date for 15 June, anticipating the legal proceedings to extend over a two-week period.
The defendant’s father was present in the courtroom gallery as the boy sat with his head in his hands. The court determined that the teenager will continue to be held in youth detention until his subsequent court appearance, set for 16 March. No bail request was made. This hearing follows the initial appearance at Bristol Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday, where the boy was formally remanded in custody.
In the wake of this heartbreaking case, the local community has paid tribute to Aria with numerous floral arrangements outside the home where she was found. Police revealed that a post-mortem indicated the cause of death as a single stab wound.
