A recent inquest has revealed that Sophie Hunt, a 34-year-old mother of two from Northampton, died following complications from cosmetic surgery in Turkey. The surgery, which included a Brazilian butt-lift (BBL) and a tummy tuck, was carried out on 7 March 2022 at the private Nisantasi Hospital in Istanbul. Two days later, Sophie experienced three cardiac arrests, leading to multi-organ failure and her subsequent death on 9 March 2022.
The family expressed serious concerns about Sophie’s fitness for the operation. Her sister, Aimee Hunt, told the BBC, “If she hadn’t had the surgery, she would be alive still.” Aimee also mentioned that the specific complications causing Sophie’s death have not been made clear, saying, “They still haven’t stated what the complications were. It’s not really an answer. No-one can really tell.” The family is seeking more detailed explanations surrounding her passing.
Following the surgery, Sophie was transferred by ambulance to Istanbul’s Avrupa Safak Hospital, where she was treated in a specialist cardiac intensive care unit but tragically passed away. At the inquest held in Northampton Coroner’s Court, Sophie’s mother, Sandra Hunt, described how Sophie lost consciousness after the operation and experienced swelling in her hands. Sandra also highlighted concerns about Sophie’s heart condition after reviewing hospital ECG records, noting the presence of an abnormal heartbeat. She stated, “We believe she was not fit for the surgery,” and raised the possibility that excessive fat injection or removal during the BBL procedure might have contributed to complications.
Coroner Sophie Lomas explained the limitations of her investigation, due to the death occurring abroad. She remarked, “I do not have the jurisdiction to fully investigate what happened in that hospital,” adding, “I have to reach the findings on the information I do have.” The coroner concluded that Sophie Hunt’s death resulted from complications related to the surgical procedures she underwent overseas.
The Turkish Council of Forensic Medicine reported that Sophie had no known pre-existing medical conditions before her abdominoplasty and liposuction surgeries. Their investigation concluded that her death was linked to these procedures and subsequent complications. After her body was repatriated to the UK, a post-mortem examination by Professor Kevin West supported this conclusion but noted that the precise cause of her cardiopulmonary arrest remains unclear.
Aimee Hunt reflected on her concerns about Sophie traveling abroad for such major surgery, describing her sister as “outgoing, funny, fun to be around, caring, kind and a brilliant mum.” This loss has deeply affected the family, who continue to seek answers about the circumstances leading to Sophie’s untimely death
