John King, a 79-year-old resident of Scunthorpe, has an extraordinary set of Christmas lights that have been in his family since 1956. Bought by his mother when he was just 10 years old, the lights were purchased from Halfords for 18 shillings. Remarkably, after nearly seven decades, the lights still function perfectly without any replacements or repairs.
Reflecting on the origins of the lights, Mr King recalled the excitement he felt as a child when his mother brought them home from a shopping trip on Scunthorpe’s High Street. “I was really excited with them because not many people could afford a set of lights in those times,” he explained. The festive decorations, made by Philips, frequently adorned his family Christmas tree alongside tinsel and glass baubles, creating cherished holiday memories.
Despite their continued reliability, Mr King has chosen to retire the lights from regular use. “I have to say they’re now in retirement because, of course, they’re so precious to me,” he said, emphasizing how sentimental the decorations have become. He holds onto them carefully and hopes they will endure for many more years to come, noting, “It looks as if they’re going to last forever at the minute.”
John King’s story highlights not only the durability of these mid-20th century Christmas lights but also the sentimental value such items can carry through generations.
