Antony Price, the celebrated British fashion designer recognized for his iconic styles worn by figures such as David Bowie, Roxy Music, and Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, has passed away at the age of 80. Price gained renown for his sculpted silhouettes and dramatic designs, notably including the pastel suits prominently featured in the music video for Duran Duran’s hit “Rio.” The band paid tribute to him on social media, describing Price as a “visionary” and a “kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend.”
Price’s death occurred shortly after he revealed a new collection in London, marking his return after more than three decades. During this event, singer Lily Allen wore a gown inspired by Princess Diana’s iconic black velvet “revenge dress,” further demonstrating Price’s enduring influence on fashion. Throughout his career, he remained known for merging elements of menswear and womenswear into body-conscious designs that were both technically innovative and theatrically striking.
Originally from Yorkshire, Price relocated to London in the early 1960s to study at the Royal College of Art. Following his graduation, he began creating menswear for Stirling Cooper and gained early acclaim for designing the buttoned trousers worn by Sir Mick Jagger during The Rolling Stones’ 1969 “Gimme Shelter” tour. In 1979, Price launched his own label, and a year later debuted a collection opened by model Jerry Hall, who also wore one of his designs for her wedding to Jagger.
Price maintained a close working relationship with David Bowie, who sported one of his jackets in the 1986 music video for “As The World Falls Down.” The British Fashion Council commended Price as a “true original” due to his distinctive blend of menswear and womenswear influences. Throughout the 1990s, he created outfits for Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, including pieces for her US tour after she assumed her royal title. His final London show took place last month in collaboration with the fashion label 16Arlington, closing a career spanning over fifty years
