Sir Cliff Richard has disclosed that he has undergone treatment for prostate cancer. The 85-year-old artist explained that the diagnosis came about during a routine medical examination required before a recent tour. Fortunately, the cancer was identified at an early stage and had not spread. “I was going to Australia and to New Zealand and the promoter said, ‘Well we need your insurance, so you need to be checked up for something’. They found that I had… prostate cancer,” he shared on ITV’s Good Morning Britain. He added, “The good fortune was that it was not very old, and the other thing is that it had not metastasized. It hadn’t moved, nothing into bones or anything like that.”
The singer was interviewed by journalist Dermot Murnaghan, who himself publicly revealed in June that he is living with stage four prostate cancer. Reflecting on his own situation, Sir Cliff said, “I don’t know whether it’s going to come back. We can’t tell those sort of things but we need to, absolutely, I’m convinced, get there, get tested, get checked.” He also expressed his desire to collaborate with the King, who recently spoke about his own cancer treatment and highlighted the significance of early screening. Sir Cliff criticized the absence of a nationwide screening program for prostate cancer as “absolutely ridiculous.”
He emphasized the responsibility of governments to ensure equal access to healthcare, stressing that everyone deserves the opportunity for early testing and treatment. “We have governments to look after our country and those who live in that country, so I can’t see how you can say, ‘Oh we can do this, we can do that, but we don’t do this for these people’,” Sir Cliff stated. He continued by noting that his conversations with others who have faced cancer all point to the crucial need for expanded screening measures. “It seems to me – I’ve only been for one year now in touch with cancer, but every time I’ve talked with anybody, this has come up and so I think our government must listen to us.”
Sir Cliff Richard, celebrated for classic hits like *The Young Ones*, *We Don’t Talk Anymore,* and *Summer Holiday*, spoke out amid ongoing debate about prostate cancer screening in the UK. Recently, the National Screening Committee, which advises UK governments, declared that a universal screening program for prostate cancer is not currently justified. Their recommendation is that only men with certain genetic mutations, which tend to result in more aggressive forms of the disease, should be screened. A public consultation on this issue is underway, and in the coming months, the committee will present its final advice to health ministers in England, Wales, Northern Ireland, and Scotland, who will decide on the matter independently
