A man has been taken into custody following an incident that resulted in Potters Bar Town’s manager requiring medical attention, subsequently causing the postponement of their match against Welling United. Both clubs announced the cancellation of the Isthmian League fixture less than 40 minutes prior to the intended 15:00 GMT start time.
Potters Bar Town confirmed that their manager, Sammy Moore, was receiving “appropriate medical care” and was being supported by the club during this time. The Metropolitan Police informed BBC Sport that they had been notified at 13:18 GMT about an incident at Welling United’s Park View Road stadium. A spokesperson for the police stated, “Police were called to Welling Football Club following reports of an altercation between two men.” Upon arrival, officers found a 38-year-old man with facial injuries, and a 42-year-old individual was arrested on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm and remains in custody.
From Potters Bar Town’s perspective, the match was postponed “following a serious incident involving a member of our management team.” The club explained that police attendance at the ground and their subsequent involvement made it impossible for the game to continue. “Our manager is receiving appropriate medical care and the club is supporting him fully,” they added. The club has referred the situation to the necessary authorities, including the league and the Football Association, and stated they would not provide further comments due to ongoing procedures. They also expressed gratitude to their supporters for understanding the circumstances.
Welling United similarly announced the postponement but said they would not issue any further comments at this time. They mentioned that updates about the rescheduled fixture would be provided later. BBC Sport reached out to Welling for additional comments. Nick Robinson, chair of the Isthmian League, acknowledged awareness of the incident and confirmed the league was awaiting official reports but declined to comment further. The Isthmian League is positioned as the seventh tier of English football, with Potters Bar Town currently at the bottom of the standings and Welling United placed two spots higher in 20th place
