Gosport funeral directors guilty of neglecting bodies

Two funeral directors, Richard Elkin, aged 49, and Hayley Bell, aged 42, have been convicted of preventing lawful burial after being found to have stored bodies in an unrefrigerated room for an extended period. The pair also faced convictions for intentionally causing a public nuisance and fraud following a trial at Portsmouth Crown Court. Prosecutors revealed that in 2022 and 2023, Elkin and Bell Funerals, located in Gosport, Hampshire, kept 46 bodies in a mortuary that lacked proper cooling facilities.

During the proceedings, Lesley Bates KC detailed the appalling conditions uncovered when court-appointed agents attended the premises to carry out repossession due to outstanding debts, which included more than £13,000 in unpaid rent.
