St Martin’s School is experiencing what the head teacher described as “a significant outbreak of flu-like illness,” according to an email seen by BBC Wales. In response, the school is implementing a short closure to help contain the spread and enable a thorough cleaning of the premises.
Lee Jarvis, the head teacher, explained in his message to parents and carers that 242 students along with 12 staff members were absent due to a range of symptoms, including vomiting, diarrhoea, high temperatures, coughs, headaches, fatigue, and other general flu-like effects. He noted that the typical recovery period for those affected seemed to be around seven days.
To reduce further transmission of the illness, the school will remain closed until Tuesday, 9 December, with online learning arranged during this period. Mr Jarvis emphasized that the situation would continue to be closely monitored and updates would be provided to families as necessary. He also urged parents to keep children at home if they showed any signs of illness, no matter how mild.
Public Health Wales confirmed that it has been in communication with St Martin’s School. It acknowledged that the school’s decision to close temporarily followed a risk assessment conducted by the institution. BBC Wales has sought further comment from Mr Jarvis regarding the outbreak and closure
