In London’s Leicester Square, a new statue honoring Bollywood legends Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol has been unveiled to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the iconic film Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge. The movie, released in 1995, is celebrated as the longest-running film in Indian cinema history.
Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge is often referred to as the Romeo and Juliet of Bollywood, telling the romantic tale of Raj and Simran as their journey unfolds across various locations in Europe and India. Notably, Leicester Square itself serves as a backdrop within the film, adding to the significance of the statue’s location.
This new addition becomes part of Leicester Square’s renowned Scenes in the Square trail, which features statues paying tribute to beloved characters from cinema. Alongside Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol, the trail includes sculptures representing figures such as Bridget Jones, Harry Potter, Gene Kelly in Singin’ in the Rain, Mary Poppins, and Batman.
By placing these statues together, Leicester Square continues to celebrate a diverse range of cinematic icons, bridging cultural and generational gaps while offering visitors a glimpse into the stories and characters that have left a lasting impact on film history
