A renowned bakery located in Anfield has collaborated with Liverpool City Council’s Business Support Service to protect valuable employment opportunities and enhance social impact across North Liverpool. Homebaked, a staple in the local community, serves thousands of football supporters and residents weekly, offering a variety of pies, bread, and breakfast options.
Beyond simply providing food, Homebaked has become a vital community space where people gather to eat, connect, and learn. The bakery’s inclusive hiring practices prioritize employing individuals with disabilities and additional needs, embodying its commitment to strong social principles. However, as the business expanded, the limited space at its production site began to strain operations.
Established twelve years ago by local community members, Homebaked operates as a cooperative supported by over 200 members. Its formula for success is rooted in offering rewarding jobs for local residents, delivering affordable, high-quality food, and providing training and development within the community. To enhance its capacity without compromising these values, Homebaked partnered with Liverpool City Council’s Business Support Service and specialist advisor Jaan Scott, whose work was funded by the Liverpool City Region Combined Authority and UK Shared Prosperity Funding.
Together, they implemented several changes including restructuring the bakery’s layout and production schedules, as well as automating the most time-intensive task of pie lid and base creation. These adjustments helped increase production capacity, alleviate team workload, and maintain stable prices for customers. Operations Manager Angela McKay noted, “Having Jaan’s knowledge on hand really helped us take the steps we needed. That simple change freed up around ten hours a week for training and new skills, making tasks less repetitive, more accessible – and all of us less stressed. The difference has been transformational.” The efficiency improvements have enabled Homebaked to better meet increasing demand, reduce waste, provide more consistent products, and strengthen relationships with local suppliers, thereby enhancing the local economy.
Councillor Nick Small, Cabinet Member for Growth and Economy, highlighted the importance of such support, stating, “Our Business Support Service is designed to help out organisations like Homebaked – established businesses that can benefit from specialist advice to grow. Everyone loves Homebaked’s pies and it’s a proud representative of Liverpool, so it’s great to see them create more capacity, which will help them grow the business and supports its hardworking team.” Angela McKay added, “The improvements in our process have been remarkable. Staff are more engaged, production is smoother and our values are stronger than ever. We’re proud to be growing together with our community.”
