Sixth form student killed in Tadcaster minibus crash named

A teenager who tragically lost her life in a road accident involving a minibus and a car in North Yorkshire has been identified. The victim, Eleanor Hague, was a 16-year-old student attending the sixth form at Tadcaster Grammar School. The fatal collision took place on Monday on Toulston Lane when the minibus carrying Eleanor collided with a Hyundai i10.

According to North Yorkshire Police, the minibus had nine passengers, all aged between 16 and 18, including the driver. Among those passengers, one sustained serious injuries, while the remainder were treated for minor injuries. Eleanor, who was from Sherburn in Elmet, was known as Ellie among her peers, and her family is currently receiving assistance from specialist officers. Additionally, another teenage girl who suffered serious injuries in the crash was rushed to hospital; however, her condition is not believed to be life-threatening. The driver of the Hyundai, a 40-year-old woman, was arrested on suspicion of causing death and serious injury by dangerous driving but has since been released on police bail.

The passengers involved in the accident were all students from Tadcaster Grammar School and Sherburn High School, which share a sixth form provision. In response to the incident, Tadcaster Grammar School expressed profound sorrow over the tragic loss. They emphasized their commitment to supporting the entire school community during this difficult time, stating, “We are totally committed to providing every member of our school community with unwavering support and empathy as we come together as one.” The school was closed on the day following the accident due to safety concerns but planned to reopen the following day, with counselors available for students and staff.

Local officials also addressed the tragedy, offering their sympathies to those affected. David Skaith, Mayor of York and North Yorkshire, and Jo Coles, Deputy Mayor for Policing, Fire and Crime, expressed their heartfelt condolences, saying, “Our condolences go to her family, friends and the whole Tadcaster community, who we know will be pulling together at this incredibly difficult time.” Meanwhile, Kirsty Poskitt, representing Tadcaster on North Yorkshire Council, described the day as “an incredibly sad day for our town” and extended her sympathy to the young people involved and to the family of Eleanor. Authorities have appealed for anyone who witnessed the crash or has relevant footage to come forward and assist the police with their investigation
