Liverpool City Council’s public health team has recently initiated a survey aimed at understanding local attitudes towards alcohol consumption and its misuse. This survey plays a key role in shaping a new alcohol strategy designed to enhance the overall health and wellbeing of Liverpool’s residents.
The consultation seeks public input on a range of possible interventions. These include providing more education about the dangers of alcohol, introducing stricter controls on alcohol sales and advertising, and increasing support resources for individuals struggling with alcohol-related problems. The forthcoming strategy will replace the last city-wide plan from 2016, which followed a report estimating that alcohol misuse costs Liverpool around £228 million each year.
Despite collaborative efforts involving businesses, agencies, and law enforcement, Liverpool continues to face significant challenges. The city still reports high numbers of emergency department admissions associated with binge drinking, alcohol poisoning, and liver disease, reflecting ongoing public health concerns.
Professor Matthew Ashton, Liverpool’s Director of Public Health, highlighted the comprehensive nature of the consultation process. “This survey is part of a wider consultation being carried out that will also see face to face workshops run with groups of people representing a broad cross-section of local communities. The online questionnaire gathers views on individuals’ experiences of alcohol use in Liverpool, of support services available, and of the possible practical measures that could be imposed or encouraged. It is expected the work will ensure the future strategy reflects the needs and priorities of Liverpool’s local population.” Residents and workers in Liverpool are encouraged to participate in the survey, which takes approximately 10 to 15 minutes to complete. While responses are anonymous, participants may provide contact details if they wish to enter a prize draw for £25, with the drawing scheduled for January 2026 and odds of winning about one in one hundred
