Buddy the runaway reindeer from Wales sparks major search

A festive reindeer named Buddy triggered a large-scale search operation after making an unexpected escape from a celebration. The incident took place in Formby, Merseyside, on a Saturday, prompting intervention from multiple agencies including armed police officers, the Coastguard, and members of the Royal Marines. The animal, who originated from north Wales, managed to flee the event and eluded capture for several hours before finally being found.

Merseyside Police began receiving reports of the missing reindeer around 13:45 GMT. Concerned that Buddy might wander into a nearby river, authorities sought additional help from coastguard teams to assist in the search. Using thermal binoculars, rescuers located the antlered animal on Formby beach. A local lifeboat quad bike team assisted by guiding Buddy into nearby sand dunes while a police drone provided aerial monitoring.

After some time on the dunes, Buddy became exhausted and eventually lay down. A veterinarian was called in to safely sedate the reindeer during the early hours of Sunday, with support from Royal Marines who happened to be training at a nearby firing range. Following sedation, Buddy was secured in a trailer and transported back to his stable.

Southport Lifeboat summarized the strange occurrence as “bizarre,” but fitting for the festive season, adding, “Christmas is saved thanks to some great work from multiple agencies.” Buddy’s owners shared an update via the local Facebook group Formby Bubble, stating their relief that he was now “safe, warm and snuggled up back home in north Wales.” They noted that after his unexpected seaside adventure, Buddy was enjoying some well-deserved rest in his cozy stable and would be taking it easy for the remainder of the year
