A video captured pigeons swiftly escaping from a historic marketplace upon the arrival of a hawk, introduced specifically to deter them. Stallholders had expressed concerns over the pigeons, describing them as a “serious public health risk.” In response, Norwich City Council deployed a Harris’s hawk to oversee Norwich Market for a period of four weeks, with the operation costing approximately £4,000.
Falconer Mikael ChuFoon commented on the scene, saying, “The pigeons were all lined up against the wall, there were practically hundreds of them, as soon as I got my bird and came round the corner they all got up – they realised the threat.” His trained bird of prey effectively prompted the pigeons to disperse.
The marketplace frequently sees large numbers of pigeons and gulls, and the council plans to assess the success of using the hawk as a deterrent once the trial concludes at the end of December. This method aims to reduce the presence of birds that stallholders find problematic for health reasons.
