Prince of Wales pays visit to severely ill children from Gaza

Prince William, the Prince of Wales, recently paid a visit to several critically ill children from Gaza who are currently receiving treatment through the NHS, according to a statement from Kensington Palace. This initiative began in September when the NHS started providing specialized medical care to children from Gaza, under a humanitarian effort spearheaded by the UK government. By 21 November, official figures from the Department of Health and Social Care indicated that 50 children were under treatment.

The evacuation of these seriously sick children and their families from Gaza was first reported in September, although the identities of those evacuated have not been publicly disclosed. A spokesperson for the government confirmed the coordination of medical evacuations from Gaza to the UK throughout the autumn months, emphasizing that the 50 patients and their immediate families are now receiving care in a safe and welcoming environment. Earlier in October, Prince William had also participated in unveiling a global memorial dedicated to humanitarian aid workers, where he spoke about the importance of humanitarian values.

This recent visit by the Prince highlights his ongoing commitment to what he describes as “more empathetic leadership around the world,” especially in matters involving humanitarian concern. In a recent episode of the documentary series *The Reluctant Traveller*, he told presenter Eugene Levy, “change is on my agenda, change for good.” He further explained, “Not overly radical change, but change that needs to happen.” Following the visit, a spokesperson for Kensington Palace remarked that the Prince wished to provide these young patients — who have endured unimaginable hardships — with some comfort. They added that His Royal Highness expressed heartfelt gratitude to the NHS staff delivering exceptional care during such a challenging period.

The background to these events involves the recent conflict initiated when Hamas-led militants from Gaza launched an attack on Israel on 7 October 2023, resulting in the deaths of 1,200 people and the abduction of 251 individuals. Subsequent to this, Israel began a military operation in Gaza. According to Gaza’s health ministry, run by Hamas, at least 70,100 people have died in the territory since the conflict began. A ceasefire was declared on 10 October
