Dozens arrested at pro-Palestine protests across England

Numerous individuals were detained under the Terrorism Act during a wave of pro-Palestine protests held across various cities in England. The demonstrations, organized by the group Defend Our Juries, took place in ten locations, including prominent cities such as Bristol, Manchester, and Birmingham. The protestors voiced their opposition to the UK government’s alleged involvement in genocide as well as the prohibition of the direct action group Palestine Action, which was banned under the Terrorism Act 2000 in July.

In Bristol, police arrested 31 people in the city centre, while in Manchester, a rally attended by approximately 200 people led to 34 arrests. Birmingham also saw significant police action when 25 demonstrators carrying placards supporting Palestine Action were arrested during a protest in Chamberlain Square. West Midlands Police spokesperson Chief Inspector James Littlehales emphasized the importance of lawful demonstrations, stating, “We fully recognise people’s right to demonstrate peacefully, and many people continue to protest in support of Palestine without breaking the law. But we will take appropriate action where people are breaching the law by showing support for proscribed organisations.” Similarly, Greater Manchester Police detained 34 individuals at St Peter’s Square on suspicion of terrorism-related offences.

Further arrests occurred in Bristol, where demonstrators gathered at College Green. Avon and Somerset Police reported that 30 individuals were taken into custody on suspicion of displaying items in support of a banned organization. Among those detained was a woman suspected of failing to provide personal details under the Police Reform Act. Inspector Ben Spence confirmed the conclusion of the protest and the subsequent stand-down of the police operation. Meanwhile, in Norwich, ten protesters were held under the Terrorism Act for carrying placards endorsing Palestine Action, according to Norfolk Police.

Separately in London, the Palestine Coalition organized a large demonstration that drew around 100,000 participants, according to the group. The Metropolitan Police made five arrests related to suspected affray and violations of the Public Order Act. Demonstrators marched from Green Park to Whitehall, many waving Palestinian flags and chanting slogans supportive of Palestine and critical of Israel. During the march along Piccadilly, some protesters ignited green and red fireworks. These protests come in the wake of a military conflict initiated by Israel in Gaza after Hamas-led militants launched attacks on 7 October 2023, resulting in the deaths of 1,200 people and the abduction of 251. Since that time, the Hamas-run health ministry in Gaza reports that at least 70,100 people have died in the territory. A ceasefire was declared on 10 October
