Londonderry: Second man charged over assaults on police officers

A man has been charged with attempting to murder police officers following an incident at a residence in Londonderry. Four officers were injured during the event that occurred on Thursday in the Collon Lane area. Eoin Carlin, aged 21 and from Collon Lane, appeared in Dungannon Magistrates’ Court on Saturday morning in connection with the case.

According to court statements, officers attempting to make an arrest were confronted by Carlin, who reportedly pulled out a hunting knife with a five-inch blade from behind his back and attacked the police. The charges against him include attempted murder, wounding, possession of a weapon, assault, and drug-related offenses. Carlin’s solicitor informed the court that his client has been receiving treatment for mental health issues and claimed that he was largely unaware he was dealing with police during the incident. It was also mentioned that Carlin checked on the welfare of two officers during police questioning. He was remanded in custody and is due to appear in Derry courthouse on 18 December, without bail being granted.

In a separate court hearing on Friday, another individual linked to the incident also faced charges. Connlan Boyle, a 20-year-old from Rosskeen Park, Derry, was accused of assaulting police officers and a custody detention officer. Additionally, Boyle faces allegations of spitting at officers and possession of a Class B drug. He was arrested following the incident and appeared via videolink in court. It was noted that Boyle was wanted on bail breach charges, and he was remanded into custody with a scheduled return on 10 December.

Both cases stem from the same Thursday morning occurrence, which resulted in injuries to police officers and subsequent arrests. The legal processes for Carlin and Boyle continue as authorities investigate the full circumstances surrounding the event
