Georgia Barrington recently became a mother, but the experience of childbirth was not hers—it was her closest friend, Daisy Hope, who carried and gave birth to Georgia’s daughter, Ottilie, in October. This profound gesture stemmed from a promise they made to each other during their teenage years, rooted in a deep and lifelong friendship. The two have been inseparable since childhood, growing up together as their fathers were best friends, and referring to each other as “soul sisters.”
The foundation for this extraordinary act was laid when Georgia, at just 15, received devastating news. She was diagnosed with Mayer-Rokitansky-Küster-Hauser (MRKH) syndrome, a rare condition affecting approximately one in every 5,000 women, which means she was born without a womb and would never be able to carry a child herself. Georgia describes the moment as life-shattering: “It was devastating, my whole world had fallen apart. I’d always grown up thinking I would be a mum and that was ripped out from under me and everything I ever dreamed of had gone.” Daisy recalls how unfair it felt that despite her friend’s deep desire to have children, it seemed impossible. In response, she made a promise to Georgia, saying she would carry a baby for her one day, although at the time she did not fully grasp what that commitment would involve.
Years passed, and more than a decade later, Daisy made good on her pledge. In 2023, they began the IVF process. Georgia had pursued a career as a midwife, immersing herself in the world of childbirth despite the personal challenge she faced. “I was asked once whether this was the right career for me,” she explains, “But actually, it helped me heal and deep down I knew I’d have a child one way or another.” Daisy, having recently given birth herself with Georgia by her side as her midwife, was even more motivated to fulfill her promise. She reflects on the joy of motherhood and her hope that everyone should be able to experience that love, although she admits she was somewhat naïve about the potential difficulties ahead.
The first pregnancy seemed hopeful until a scan at seven weeks showed an empty womb, ending their hopes for that embryo. Georgia recounts the sinking feeling that extinguished their hope when the nurse shared the news. Despite the heartbreak, they persevered. The second time around, Daisy found herself pregnant again, but early complications raised fears of another loss. After hours of heavy bleeding, the doctors confirmed the heartbeat was still strong, and the pregnancy continued to full term. Daisy eventually went into labor slightly early and gave birth to their daughter, Ottilie. Georgia was overwhelmed by the moment and remembers, “As soon as I saw the baby’s head, I just lost it and we were all crying.” Reflecting on their journey, Georgia expresses gratitude and a wish to comfort her younger self during the difficult diagnosis, while Daisy emphasizes the unique and powerful bond they share through their deeply personal experience
