Irish novelist Sally Rooney has informed the High Court that due to the UK’s outlawing of the group Palestine Action under terrorism legislation, it is “almost certain” she will be unable to publish new novels in the UK and might even be forced to withdraw her existing books from sale. According to Rooney, the current UK laws could prevent her British publisher and the BBC from paying her royalties, as such payments could expose them to allegations of funding terrorism.
In August, Rooney publicly declared her intention to donate royalties to Palestine Action. This group was banned in July after the home secretary accused it of causing serious property damage. One of Palestine Action’s co-founders is contesting the ban in the High Court, arguing that it infringes upon the right to protest. Rooney, known for her novel *Normal People*, which was turned into a popular BBC drama, has been vocal in her support for reversing the ban.
