Ex-BNP leader Nick Griffin sent 'racist' cartoon tweet, court told

Nick Griffin, the former leader of the British National Party, has made a court appearance facing charges related to inciting racial hatred. The 66-year-old, residing in Welshpool, Powys, is accused of sharing a cartoon on social media in 2021 that was considered “threatening, abusive or insulting.” During his appearance via video link at Westminster Magistrates’ Court, Griffin did not enter any plea.

Following the hearing, he was granted unconditional bail and is scheduled to appear at Southwark Crown Court on 22 December. Griffin, who also served as a Member of the European Parliament, is subject to a private prosecution brought by the Campaign Against Antisemitism (CAA).

This prosecution is among a series of cases recently initiated by the CAA. Donal Lawler, representing the organization, emphasized that the controversial cartoon was shared on Griffin’s X account (formerly known as Twitter) at a time when he was a prominent figure with a substantial follower count.

During the proceedings, Chief Magistrate Paul Goldspring noted that the magistrates’ court lacked the authority to impose appropriate penalties if Griffin were found guilty. He therefore formally referred the case to Southwark Crown Court for further handling
