In May 2026, Liverpool is set to welcome the BBC Comedy Festival for its fifth edition. The event will take place over three days, from Wednesday 13th to Friday 15th May, featuring a range of activities such as talks, panels, live comedy performances, screenings, and a short film night. This festival provides a platform for both emerging and established professionals in the television comedy industry to connect, celebrate, and exchange ideas.
The BBC Comedy Festival has previously been hosted in cities including Belfast, Glasgow, Cardiff, and Newcastle. The 2025 festival, held in Belfast, showcased 16 panels and masterclasses across two days, with over 70 performers participating. Notable names included Steve Coogan, Lisa McGee, Ash Atalla, and Michelle de Swarte. During that event, BBC Comedy and BBC Northern Ireland announced a dedicated £500,000 fund aimed at supporting comedy production in Northern Ireland. The 2026 festival will mark a shift in focus to the North West of England, initiating new development and production opportunities in that region, with further details expected to be announced later.
Liverpool City Council’s Cabinet Member for Health, Wellbeing and Culture, Councillor Harry Doyle, emphasized the city’s natural fit for hosting the festival, highlighting its rich comedic heritage. “Our city is well known for its sense of humour and has produced some of the country’s top comedic talent, so it feels natural to be welcoming the next BBC Comedy Festival to Liverpool,” he said. He also expressed enthusiasm about the collaborative potential the festival offers those in the industry and the city’s plans to work alongside the BBC to foster talent development and production in the region.
Jon Petrie, BBC’s Director of Comedy, praised Liverpool’s vibrant comedy scene, stating, “Liverpool has funny bones and a rich culture of producing top tier comedy creatives, so we’re delighted to be bringing the BBC Comedy Festival 2026 to the city.” He added, “Comedy forms a unique corner of the television industry and in British culture. It’s important that we provide a forum that brings together some of the best comedy minds to celebrate and discuss the success of the sector now and in the future.” The festival will include some events open to the public, with further information on venues, dates, and ticket availability to be shared closer to the time
