A young girl from Prestonpans in East Lothian has demonstrated remarkable determination by reaching the summit of Britain’s tallest mountain under severe winter weather. Five-year-old Faye Moffat undertook the challenging climb of Ben Nevis alongside her father, Craig, during the weekend. Their goal was to raise funds for children in need, and so far, their efforts have brought in over £1,000 for the Glasgow Children’s Hospital Charity (GCHC).
Despite facing harsh conditions, including a blizzard at the peak, Faye persevered without giving up. Her father expressed his pride, saying, “She faced snow, ice, a blizzard at the summit and a long descent in the dark – but she never once gave up.” He also highlighted how the experience helped Faye appreciate the impact individuals can make when supporting important causes.
This expedition was not Faye’s first; she successfully climbed her first Munro solo in the previous winter. Before beginning their Ben Nevis adventure, Faye shared a message on their JustGiving page emphasizing her resolve: “This will be my hardest adventure. My daddy says if we don’t give up we can do anything so I won’t give up. Please help me raise pennies for the boys and girls who need help.”
Starting their climb at 7 am in darkness, Craig and Faye carried overnight supplies and established a camp midway up the mountain. From there, they battled deep snow, strong winds, and icy slopes, using crampons to aid their progress as they ascended to the summit in very difficult weather. After reaching the top, they faced a long, challenging descent back to their tent, navigating through heavy rain and darkness aided by headtorches. Their 10-hour journey was aimed at raising funds for the GCHC, a charity that supports over 500 young patients daily. Faye’s motivation is deeply personal; the charity has cared for her cousin and friend, both of whom have benefited from life-saving treatments. Faye said, “My cousin Owen and friend Lucy are both alive because of the hospital and charity. I want to raise pennies to help buy things to help children who aren’t well.
