Mid and East Antrim councillors are set to consider a proposal on Monday regarding the renaming of a street currently named after Andrew Mountbatten Windsor. The street, located in Carrickfergus, County Antrim, was originally named Prince Andrew Way in honor of his marriage to Sarah Ferguson back in 1986.
The move to rename the street comes in the wake of a formal process initiated by the King last month to remove his brother’s titles. This followed public controversy surrounding Andrew’s friendship with Jeffrey Epstein, a convicted sex offender. Although Andrew has consistently denied any wrongdoing, his association with Epstein has posed challenges for the Royal Family.
The council’s agenda for their monthly meeting includes a motion from the Alliance party proposing the street be renamed. Their proposal suggests selecting a new name that preserves a connection to the Royal Family. One suggestion within the motion is to dedicate the street to Queen Elizabeth II, describing such a change as a “fitting tribute” in light of ongoing discussions to honor the late monarch. The street is home to a small number of residences and businesses. Other parties, including the Democratic Unionist Party (DUP), also support the renaming initiative. However, the timeline for the process remains uncertain if the council approves the proposal on Monday evening.
Earlier in October, Andrew publicly announced his decision to relinquish all royal titles, including the Duke of York and Baron Killyleagh—the latter title having been granted by Queen Elizabeth II on his wedding day. This announcement followed the resurfacing of emails from 2011 that showed him maintaining contact with Epstein months after claiming their friendship had ended. The removal of all of Andrew’s titles was officially published earlier this month
