Harry Potter star Rupert Grint: 'I'll never leave Ron's shadow'

Rupert Grint, best known for his role as Ron Weasley in the Harry Potter film series, shared with the BBC that he doesn’t expect to ever fully emerge from the shadow of the character that defined much of his early career. More than a decade after the final installment of the franchise was released, Grint remains embracing the legacy. “I’m fine with that. I think it’s great,” he said, appreciating the deep connection many fans have with the series as a cherished part of their childhood.

At a recent event in Highgate, north London, where he helped turn on the Christmas lights, Grint reflected on his ongoing ties to the wizarding world. The actor, 37, who resides locally with his partner Georgia Groome and their two daughters, spoke about the cyclical nature of the Harry Potter legacy as a new TV adaptation approaches. Notably, he has written a letter to Alastair Stout, the young actor who has been cast as Ron in the forthcoming HBO series, passing on his support and encouragement. “It’s quite strange to have the cycle happening again,” Grint remarked, expressing curiosity about how the new show will unfold.

Grint’s journey into the world of Harry Potter began when he was just 11 years old, stepping into the role of Ron Weasley, one of Harry’s closest friends at Hogwarts. The experience transformed his life almost overnight. “It changed my whole life quite quickly,” he said, recalling how much he loved the books and how special it was to bring them to life on screen. Alongside co-stars Daniel Radcliffe and Emma Watson, Grint became part of a cultural phenomenon that spanned a decade and captured the imaginations of millions worldwide.

Since the end of the Harry Potter series, Grint has taken on diverse roles in film and television, including appearances in “Into the White” and Apple TV’s “Servant,” as well as cameos in Ed Sheeran’s music videos. Despite these ventures, he acknowledges the challenge of stepping beyond his iconic portrayal of Ron. However, he continues to embrace this association with pride. “I don’t think I’ll ever quite step out of his shadow, but I’m fine with that,” he said. Grint also touched on the new Harry Potter cast announced earlier this year, noting both a sense of nostalgia and excitement for the fresh take on the beloved story. While discussing his own children’s exposure to the franchise, he mentioned that his daughter Wednesday finds the films a bit scary but still enjoys watching clips.

When asked about the possibility of revisiting the wizarding world again, Grint was open-minded but noncommittal. Reflecting on his co-star Tom Felton’s recent return to the franchise through a Broadway role, he said, “Maybe in the future. Never say never.” Still, for now, he is content to explore other creative opportunities beyond the magical realm. On a lighter note, he revealed that if sorted into a Hogwarts house himself, he would likely belong to Hufflepuff, with Gryffindor a close runner-up
