Scotland’s passionate fans generated seismic activity as they celebrated their national team’s qualification for the World Cup, their first in 28 years. The British Geological Survey (BGS) detected what amounted to an “extremely small earthquake” when Kenny McLean scored a remarkable goal by lobbing Denmark’s goalkeeper, Kasper Schmeichel, securing a 4-2 victory for Scotland. Shortly after, another notable tremor was recorded when the final whistle blew on Wednesday night.
The sensors at the Glasgow Geothermal Observatory in Dalmarnock, situated roughly 2 kilometers from Hampden Park, captured these vibrations. The BGS also picked up a smaller pulse of activity earlier in stoppage time, coinciding with Kieran Tierney curling in Scotland’s third goal. However, the most significant spike was recorded between 21:48 and 21:50, the moment McLean scored his extraordinary goal from the halfway line.
Attendance for the game was officially noted at 49,587 spectators. The BGS explained that the seismic readings corresponded to a magnitude between -1 and zero on the Richter Scale, with an energy output equal to around 200 kilowatts. This level of energy is comparable to powering between 25 and 40 car batteries, or striking a football at an estimated speed of 900 meters per second (approximately 2,013 miles per hour). Remarkably, this is about 15 times faster than the previously recorded fastest shot in football, made by Brazilian defender Ronny Heberson, who clocked a shot at 131.2 mph in 2007.
In a similar instance of fans causing measurable seismic activity, Taylor Swift’s concerts at Murrayfield Stadium in Edinburgh last summer also made the earth move. Nevertheless, the BGS cautioned that the two events could not be compared directly due to differing site conditions. The agency reports that around 300 natural earthquakes occur annually in the UK, though just 30 of these are strong enough to be felt. For example, a 3.3 magnitude earthquake was recently experienced across Perthshire in homes just last month
