Iqbal Mohamed quits Jeremy Corbyn's new left-wing party

A second Member of Parliament (MP) has chosen to leave Your Party, a recently established left-wing political group founded by former Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn and ex-Labour MP Zarah Sultana. Iqbal Mohamed, the MP representing Dewsbury and Batley, announced his departure through a social media statement. While he did not provide specific reasons for stepping down, Mohamed alluded to being the target of “false allegations and smears made against me.”

Mohamed emphasized the need for British politics to embrace “a genuine, inclusive force for positive change,” expressing his hope that Your Party could fulfill such a role despite his resignation. The party has not yet issued a comment regarding his exit. This follows closely on the heels of a similar announcement from Blackburn MP Adnan Hussain, who stated last week that he was leaving Your Party due to what he described as a “toxic” environment, particularly relating to attitudes toward “Muslim men.”

The formation of Your Party traces back to July when Sultana declared her departure from Labour to launch a new political force alongside Corbyn, aiming to confront what they saw as a “broken” Westminster system. However, internal conflicts have since surfaced within the group, including disputes over the management of £800,000 in donations. In his statement, Mohamed lamented the internal tensions, saying, “The many false allegations and smears made against me and others, and reported as fact without evidence, have been surprising and disappointing.” He also expressed confidence that he and his colleagues had acted “professionally, patiently, and in good faith throughout.”

Mohamed concluded his statement by thanking supporters of Your Party and wishing them success, while confirming that he will continue his work in Parliament with the Independent Alliance—a group formed after the 2024 general election consisting of Corbyn and four other independent pro-Gaza MPs. Although Your Party has yet to officially form a parliamentary group, it is preparing for its inaugural conference on 29 November in Liverpool, where delegates will select an official name and leadership structure. Leading up to this event, Zarah Sultana plans to host a rally dubbed “Zarah’s eve of conference Your Party rally.” Originally aimed at attracting left-leaning voters dissatisfied with the Labour government, the group has recently struggled to maintain support, losing ground to the Green Party, which has gained momentum and membership since the election of its new left-wing leader, Zack Polanski
