David Carrick, a former officer of the Metropolitan Police, has been handed an additional life sentence after being convicted of further sexual offences. The 50-year-old was found guilty of multiple counts related to the sexual abuse of a girl when he was just 14 years old, as well as raping a former partner years later. Prior to this latest sentencing, Carrick was already serving 36 life sentences with a minimum term of 32 years, following his admission to 71 offences of sexual violence spanning 17 years.
The recent convictions include five counts of indecent assault against the girl, which occurred between April 1989 and August 1990. Carrick was also found guilty of two separate rapes of a former partner, with incidents dated in 2019 and between 2014 and 2016, alongside additional charges for sexual assault and coercive and controlling behaviour. During court proceedings, victim impact statements revealed the deep and lasting trauma caused by Carrick’s actions, showing how the effects had persisted into adulthood.
During sentencing, prosecutor Tom Little KC emphasized that the offences committed against the underage girl must be considered under juvenile law due to Carrick’s age at the time. Despite this, mitigation was described as limited, especially as the earliest parole date had already been set for 2054 when Carrick would be 78 years old. Judge Mrs Justice McGowan remarked that the new sentence would have minimal practical effect given the existing terms. She criticized Carrick for his lack of remorse and for causing further distress by forcing witnesses to attend court through denial of the charges. She underscored his predatory nature beginning in childhood and highlighted the abusive and manipulative conduct he had exhibited toward his former partner.
The statement from the woman abused as a child was read aloud by barrister Gareth Munday, who represented the prosecution. She expressed her disbelief in Carrick’s remorse and stated her struggle with trust resulting from the abuse. She said, “The effects of these offences are not something I can simply move on from.” The newly unveiled offences emerged following Carrick’s prior guilty pleas in 2022 and 2023. Throughout the trial, it became clear that he had previously dismissed allegations against him, describing his now-adult accuser as dishonest and maintaining that sexual encounters with his ex-partner were consensual. The judge noted that the earlier teenage abuse was the first indication of Carrick’s longstanding pattern of predatory sexual behaviour. With this additional sentence, Carrick’s earliest parole eligibility has been extended, requiring him to wait until 2055 before he can seek release
