John Whaite: Strictly contestant and Bake Off winner reveals steroid addiction

John Whaite, the television chef widely recognized for winning The Great British Bake Off in 2012 and for finishing as runner-up on Strictly Come Dancing in 2021, has opened up about his difficult experience with steroid addiction. In a heartfelt Instagram video, the 36-year-old revealed that he had been using anabolic steroids illegally for five years, a habit that severely impacted his mental health and at one point “made me want to end my life.” He expressed his intention to speak out as a warning, hoping that young men will rethink the way they treat their bodies.

During lockdown, Whaite began taking steroids after struggling with body image issues. He explained that the way he saw himself in the mirror was distressing, leading him down this harmful path. The chef also shared that he suffers from bulimia and body dysmorphia, conditions that skew an individual’s perception of their appearance. He admitted, “The more people acknowledged how I looked on steroids, the more I felt good about myself, I felt valid.” However, the side effects were significant, including severe acne, an unregulated sex drive, and notably, shrinkage of his testicles, which he candidly described as “I’ve got tiny balls now, there’s your headline.”

Whaite’s decision to go public came after overhearing a younger family member talking about using a “dangerously strong steroid.” Concerned for young people who may be influenced by idealized physiques on social media, he urged them to respect their bodies and warned against pushing beyond natural limits. In his emotional message, he said, “You’ve only got one body, so please just respect it… try and get to the place where you look in the mirror and you see yourself with kind eyes.” He acknowledged that his steroid use was a personal mistake and shared a determined resolve to move on, stating in the video caption: “Steroids have made me want to end my life. That stops now. I choose life. I choose health. I choose love. I choose a simpler life.”

Anabolic steroids, which mimic the male hormone testosterone, are classified as Class C drugs in the UK. While it is legal for individuals to possess them with a prescription, supplying or selling steroids is illegal and can result in up to 14 years in prison. Recent data showed that seizures of anabolic steroids increased by 26% last year, most intercepted at the border. These drugs interfere with the body’s natural functions, including sperm production, and some side effects like testicle shrinkage can take years to reverse—or in some cases, may not fully recover—even after usage stops
