A tragic two-car collision near Dundalk in County Louth has resulted in the deaths of five young people and injuries to three others. According to the Gardaí, the crash occurred just after 9 p.m. local time on Saturday on the Ardee Road at Gibstown. The five fatalities, comprising three men and two women all under the age of 25, were occupants of one vehicle involved in the incident.
It is believed that the group may have been on their way to socialize when the collision happened. Following the crash, Gardaí confirmed on Sunday morning that the vehicles and the bodies of those who died remain at the scene as investigations continue. Superintendent Charlie Armstrong provided details from the location, explaining that two cars—a Volkswagen Golf and a Toyota Land Cruiser—were involved. Armstrong said, “Five occupants of the Volkswagen Golf, three males and two females all in their early 20s, were deceased at the scene.”
In addition to the five fatalities, another male passenger in the Volkswagen, also in his 20s, was transported to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda with serious but non-life-threatening injuries. The two occupants of the Toyota Land Cruiser—a man and a woman—were likewise taken to the same hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Superintendent Armstrong expressed condolences and called for privacy for the families affected by this devastating event, noting its profound impact on communities in Carrickmacross, Dromconrath, Scotland, and Dundalk. He praised the emergency responders, describing the scene as difficult due to adverse weather. “The professionalism shown by all first responders and the care and respect shown to the five deceased was exemplary,” he said.
The road between the N52 and the R171 remains closed while Garda Forensic Collision Investigators conduct a technical examination. Local traffic diversions are in place, and Gardaí have appealed to anyone who witnessed the crash to come forward with information.
National leaders have also responded to the tragedy. Taoiseach Micheál Martin described being “numbed and shocked at the horrific road crash,” sending his thoughts and prayers to the families, friends, and first responders. The Tánaiste commented that “a veil of deep sadness and shock has come over our country this morning.” Local representatives expressed their sorrow as well. Fianna Fáil councillor Shane McGuinness, who lives near the accident site, highlighted the dangers of the stretch of road, citing bad bends, lack of lighting, and poor weather conditions that night. Sinn Féin TD Ruairí Ó Murchú described the news as “dreadful and shocking” and offered his support to the bereaved families, communities, and emergency services facing the aftermath
