During a protest and counter-demonstration in Bristol, five individuals were apprehended after police officers were attacked. The incident occurred outside the Mercure hotel in Redcliff, which provides accommodation for asylum seekers. One police officer required hospital treatment following the disturbances.
The Avon and Somerset Police reported that a segment of the counter-protesters appeared determined to create disorder on Saturday afternoon. Approximately 75 members of a group identifying as the Bristol Patriots assembled outside the hotel, where they encountered around 350 counter-demonstrators. In the days leading up to the event, posters circulated across the city urging residents to “defend the Mercure.”
Roughly 200 officers from Avon and Somerset Police were deployed to manage the situation. Chief Inspector Keith Smith expressed disappointment, stating, “It is disappointing a group within the counter-protest has seemingly been intent on causing disorder.” He confirmed that several arrests had been made and some counter-protesters were instructed to leave the city center.
Chief Inspector Smith also praised the officers for their efforts to keep the two groups apart during the unrest but condemned the assaults on police personnel as “totally unacceptable.” The officer receiving hospital care was being monitored for the extent of their injuries. Authorities have maintained a dispersal zone and special powers in the area until 22:00 GMT to help control the situation
