Two birds of prey stolen from Cornish rescue centre

The Cornish Birds of Prey Centre CIC recently experienced the theft of two of its birds, though one has since been recovered, according to the centre’s owner. Between 17:00 GMT on Thursday and 07:00 on Friday, a gyr falcon and a striated caracara were stolen from the rescue facility located at Winnards Perch in Cornwall.

The gyr falcon, which the centre refers to as Arizona, was discovered on Saturday beside the road opposite a layby at Winnards Perch. Kelly Grigg, who manages the centre, reported that the bolt and padlock securing one of the aviaries had been forcibly damaged. She also expressed her belief that those responsible for the theft must have had an intimate knowledge of the site, as they managed to avoid all CCTV cameras in the area.

Devon and Cornwall Police have urged anyone with information or witnesses to come forward to assist with the investigation. The rescue centre extended its thanks via social media to people who reported sightings of the gyr falcon and noted appreciation for drivers who stopped their vehicles to allow the bird to be safely caught after it was found.

Ms. Grigg recounted that she discovered the aviary gate open during her routine checks on Friday morning, which alerted her to the missing birds. She also mentioned that another lock showed signs of attempted forced entry, likely with a crowbar or a similar tool, although that attempt was unsuccessful. “All I want is the birds back safe and sound and I will do everything in my power to get them home safely,” she said
