The match, featuring AFC Rushden & Diamonds against Coventry Sphinx, was abandoned at half-time after comments of a discriminatory nature were reportedly heard from the crowd, aimed at the official.

AFC Rushden & Diamonds expressed strong concern and disappointment over the event. The club emphasized its commitment to addressing the matter seriously, stating it would take “the strongest possible action” if it was determined the individual responsible was connected to the club. Efforts to identify the person involved were not successful, and the incident has been passed on to the appropriate authorities for further investigation.

In a statement shared on social media, a spokesperson for AFC Rushden & Diamonds highlighted that “discriminatory language or actions of any kind have absolutely no place within our community club or the wider football community.” Meanwhile, attempts to gather comments from the Football Association and Coventry Sphinx remain ongoing.

Following the incident, Diamonds’ first team manager Elliot Sandy spoke to the club’s media, explaining that the referee initially paused the match to have the offending spectator removed. However, by half-time, she informed the team that she no longer felt comfortable carrying on with the game. Sandy condemned the abuse, saying, “there’s no place for it in football and I feel really sorry for her that it has actually happened.” Both teams compete in the Northern Premier League Midlands Division.
