A coordinated search effort involving multiple agencies is currently underway off the coast of the Republic of Ireland to locate a missing crew member from the UK navy. According to a statement from the Irish Department of Transport (DfT), the individual was last observed around 22:30 local time on Friday near Tory Island, located in County Donegal.
The Irish Coast Guard received a distress signal from a UK naval support vessel just before 09:00 on Saturday morning. The Ministry of Defence (MoD) confirmed that the Royal Navy is participating in the ongoing search and rescue operation, which is focused on finding a member of the Royal Fleet Auxiliary.
In addition to the Royal Navy, the Irish Coast Guard, the Irish Air Corps, and the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) are actively involved in the mission. A spokesperson from the DfT explained that the Malin Head Coast Guard is directing the search efforts in the area between Tory Island and Eagle Island in County Mayo.
From the air, the search is being carried out by several aircraft including the Coast Guard’s fixed-wing plane, Rescue 120F, operating out of Shannon airport; the Coast Guard’s helicopter Rescue 118, based in Sligo; and the Irish Air Corps’ CASA 284 aircraft. On the water, the UK naval support vessel and three RNLI all-weather lifeboats stationed at Ballyglass, Arranmore Island, and Lough Swilly, along with additional vessels, are conducting thorough sea searches in the designated area
