New photo for King Charles's 77th birthday

Buckingham Palace has released a new photograph of King Charles in celebration of his 77th birthday. The image, captured by Millie Pilkington, features the King at his Sandringham estate in Norfolk, holding a shepherd’s crook. Alongside the photo on social media, a message accompanied by a balloon emoji read: “77 today! Thank you for the kind words and well wishes on His Majesty’s Birthday.”

For his birthday, King Charles is spending time in South Wales with Queen Camilla. Their schedule includes an engagement with Ruth Jones, known for her role in the BBC series Gavin and Stacey. While it remains unclear whether the King would describe meeting the actress, who played Nessa, as “tidy,” the planned celebrations also involve a reception at Cyfarthfa Castle in Merthyr Tydfil. The castle is marking its 200th anniversary and will host a birthday cake in honor of the monarch.

The royal visit to South Wales coincides with the arrival of Storm Claudia, which is expected to bring heavy rainfall to the area. These weather conditions follow a turbulent period for the royal family. Notably, Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor has been stripped of his princely title due to his connections to the convicted financier Jeffrey Epstein. This controversy has overshadowed what has otherwise been a busy autumn for King Charles, who has recently welcomed U.S. President Donald Trump on a state visit, held a historic audience with Pope Leo at the Vatican, and taken part in annual Remembrance ceremonies.

Despite ongoing cancer treatment, King Charles is demonstrating a strong commitment to his royal duties through this South Wales trip. Though his reign is still in its early years, at 77, he has now surpassed George II in longevity, who passed away shortly before his 77th birthday in 1760. Among the longest-lived British monarchs are Elizabeth II, Victoria, George III, and Edward VIII, the latter having abdicated in 1936
