Royal outrider acquitted over pensioner road death

A police motorcyclist involved in escorting the Duchess of Edinburgh through London has been acquitted of causing death by careless driving following a fatal collision. The rider, PC Christopher Harrison, 68, collided with Helen Holland, an 81-year-old pensioner, who later died two weeks after the incident on 10 May 2023. The crash occurred on West Cromwell Road in west London.

During the trial at the Old Bailey, it was revealed that PC Harrison was traveling between 44mph and 58mph in a zone where the speed limit was 30mph as he approached a red traffic light. Mrs. Holland was crossing the road at that time. PC Harrison testified that he did not see Mrs. Holland on the footway as he neared the traffic light.

The court was informed that riders in the royal outrider team are permitted to exceed speed limits, proceed through red lights, and even drive on the opposite side of the road; however, they are required to do so with safety as a priority. When the verdict of not guilty was announced, someone from the public gallery shouted, “You ruined our family with no consequences.” Following this, Mr Justice Martin Chamberlain allowed PC Harrison to leave the courtroom freely.

The case attracted significant attention due to the circumstances surrounding the escort and the tragic loss of life. Nevertheless, the judicial process concluded with the motorcyclist being cleared of any criminal wrongdoing related to careless driving
