Parents meet minister over Leeds baby funeral director 'horror'

BBC Yorkshire and Lincolnshire Investigations journalists Anna Crossley and Louise Fewster report that families who experienced distressing incidents involving their babies’ bodies being kept at a funeral director’s home are calling for stricter regulations within the funeral industry. Zoe Ward, a mother whose son’s body was inappropriately stored at Amie Upton’s residence, expressed her shock and dismay at the lack of oversight in the sector. Ms. Ward and another affected family are scheduled to meet Victims Minister Alex Davies-Jones to advocate for change.

Ms. Ward enlisted Florries Army to arrange her baby Bleu’s funeral following his passing due to brain damage at three weeks old in 2021. She anticipated a professional setting for her son’s final farewell but was alarmed to find him in Ms. Upton’s living room. This unsettling experience has motivated Ms. Ward to push for tighter regulations in the funeral industry, which currently lacks legal requirements for body storage and qualifications for funeral directors.

In response to the outcry, the government has stated that plans to regulate the funeral sector will be announced by the year’s end. This follows a previous inquiry in which statutory regulations were recommended for England. Many affected families, including Cody and Liam Townend, are participating in discussions with the Victims Minister to share their harrowing experiences and advocate for improved standards and oversight within the industry.

The investigations revealed that Ms. Upton had been prohibited from entering Leeds Teaching Hospitals Trust’s facilities due to previous incidents involving the improper storage of deceased infants. While West Yorkshire Police conducted an investigation into Florries Army, no criminal activity was identified. Despite some positive reviews, highlighting exceptional service, families affected by these distressing incidents are striving to ensure that no one else endures such traumatic experiences
