Images of stolen gold artefacts dating back to the Bronze Age have been released by the police as they continue their investigation into a recent museum theft in Wales. The South Wales Police disclosed that the gold jewellery was taken from the St Fagans National Museum of History in Cardiff in the early hours of October 6th. Two individuals, Gavin Burnett, 43, and Darren Burnett, 50, both hailing from Northampton, were charged with burglary and are currently in custody.
Detective Inspector Bob Chambers of South Wales Police emphasized that the search for the stolen items is still ongoing despite the arrests. The authorities are working diligently to recover the missing artefacts and return them to the museum. They are urging anyone with information to come forward to assist in their efforts. Some of the missing items include a hoard of Middle Bronze Age gold armlets and items from various locations in Wales.
St Fagans National Museum of History, part of Amgueddfa Cymru’s collection of national museums, is renowned for its diverse exhibits showcasing different aspects of Welsh history. The stolen items, including gold ingots, bracelets, and a lunula necklace, are considered invaluable and irreplaceable pieces of Wales’ heritage. Amgueddfa Cymru’s chief executive, Jane Richardson, stressed the significance of recovering these items to preserve Wales’ cultural legacy for future generations.
A 45-year-old woman from Northamptonshire, also connected to the investigation, is currently on police bail. St Fagans museum, situated in the outskirts of Cardiff, is a prominent heritage site in Wales, featuring over 40 reconstructed buildings representing various periods of Welsh history. The museum underwent a major redevelopment in 2018, winning the prestigious Art Fund Museum of the Year award in 2019.
