Liverpool City Council is taking a bold step towards becoming an anti-racist organization and creating an environment where everyone feels safe, valued, and respected. The Council’s recently unveiled anti-racism commitment and action plan mark a significant milestone in its efforts to combat racism within the Council, public services, and communities. Recognizing past shortcomings in this area, the Council aims to rebuild trust through transparency, action, and accountability.
In conjunction with the release of the plan, the Council is launching the ‘This is Liverpool’ campaign, which seeks to celebrate the city’s diverse population, promote inclusivity, and encourage unity in eradicating discrimination. Shaped by the input of community groups, along with feedback from over 1,200 residents and 550 council staff members, the plan outlines key priorities for action, including a zero-tolerance approach to racism, diverse leadership representation, countering misinformation, fair recruitment practices, and enhancing opportunities for racially diverse businesses and community organizations.
An oversight group comprised of members from the community will monitor the plan’s implementation and ensure accountability. Progress updates will be regularly published, as the Council continues to engage with communities, residents, partners, and its workforce to drive meaningful change. Cllr Liam Robinson, Leader of Liverpool City Council, emphasized the city’s commitment to addressing racism, fostering trust, and creating a welcoming environment for all residents. Similarly, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Resources and Transformation, Cllr Ruth Bennett, underscored the importance of consistent action, openness, and collaboration in tackling racism effectively.
