A man from Romania has been sentenced to nine years in prison for raping a doctor in Glasgow city center. Mihai Nicolae Patran attacked the 29-year-old woman on Mitchell Street in the early hours of November 26, 2023. The victim, who was not acquainted with her assailant, managed to escape partially clothed to the safety of a taxi.
During his trial at the High Court in Glasgow, Patran was found guilty of the rape. Judge Norman McFadyen labeled him as a “dangerous man and a danger to women.” The judge expressed hope that Patran would be deported or removed from the country as soon as possible. In the event that Patran is released and remains at large, the judge stated that the risk he poses necessitates an extended sentence, including three years of supervision after his release.
Following the attack, Patran exhibited inappropriate behavior during his court appearance at Glasgow Sheriff Court. He was caught indulging in sexual activities while handcuffed to a female prison officer. This incident, along with a previous offense of exposing himself on a train between Perth and Stirling, led to Patran being listed as a sex offender indefinitely. The court deemed him guilty on all three charges brought against him.
Patran’s behavior throughout the legal proceedings and his criminal history have raised concerns about his potential to cause harm. Judge McFadyen’s decision to impose an extended sentence reflects the gravity of the situation and the need to protect the public from individuals like Patran. The case serves as a reminder of the importance of ensuring justice and accountability in cases of sexual assault and violence against women
