Tim Westwood, a former BBC Radio 1 and Capital Xtra DJ, made an appearance at Westminster Magistrates’ Court for his initial hearing following being charged with four counts of rape last month. Alongside the rape charges, the 68-year-old also faces nine counts of indecent assault and two counts of sexual assault. Some of the alleged incidents of indecent assault took place in BBC studios during the 1990s.
The charges brought against Westwood involve seven women, with some as young as 17 years old at the time of the alleged incidents. The accusations date back from 1983 to 2016. Although he was granted bail during the hearing at Westminster Magistrates’ Court, Westwood has not yet been required to enter a plea, despite previously denying any allegations of misconduct.
During the court appearance, Westwood, dressed in a dark grey shirt, provided his full name, address, and date of birth. As a condition of his bail, he has been prohibited from contacting prosecution witnesses. The case is set to proceed to Southwark Crown Court for further proceedings on 8 December.
Among the various offences Westwood has been charged with include incidents such as indecent assault of a 17-year-old in 1983 in Fulham, and rape and indecent assault of a 17-18-year-old in London during the periods of 1995-1996 and 2000-2001, respectively. In 2010, allegations include the rape of a woman in her 20s in London and the sexual assault of another woman in her 20s in Stroud. Additionally, in 2016, a woman in her 20s was reportedly sexually assaulted in the Finchley area of London.
