UK military to help protect Belgium after drone incursions

Sir Richard Knighton, the new leader of the UK military, announced that UK military personnel and equipment are being dispatched to Belgium to assist in strengthening its defenses following drone incursions suspected to be carried out by Russia. Belgium faced disruptions when drones were detected near its main airport, Zavantem, leading to a temporary closure of the airport on Thursday night. Other sightings of drones were reported in various locations, including a military base. While there is uncertainty about the source of the incursions, Knighton acknowledged the possibility of Russian involvement, stating that it could be “plausible” that Moscow was behind the incidents.

Defence Secretary John Healey emphasized the importance of collective defense against hybrid threats, stating that alliances play a crucial role in protecting critical infrastructure and airspace. The UK, along with its Nato allies, is actively supporting Belgium by deploying equipment and capabilities. German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius also announced Germany’s support for Belgium with anti-drone measures in response to Brussels’ request, following the suspected involvement of Russia in the incidents.

Sir Richard highlighted Russia as the most immediate threat to Europe, citing the illegal invasion of Ukraine as evidence of the country’s aggressive actions. He stressed the need for stronger defenses against hybrid warfare, underscoring the importance of collaboration with other nations through organizations like Nato.
