An attack in Birmingham city centre has led to a man being charged with attempted murder after a woman was stabbed in the neck. Djeison Rafael, 21, is facing the charges for the incident that took place outside the Bullring shopping centre. Along with attempted murder, he is also accused of two counts of assault and possession of a blade. The victim, a woman in her 30s, is currently in critical condition at the hospital following the attack on Smallbrook Queensway just before 9:00 PM GMT on Friday.
West Midlands Police have identified Mr. Rafael as a black British national and have stated that he has been remanded to appear before magistrates in Birmingham on Monday. Authorities are urging anyone with information about the incident to come forward to assist with their ongoing investigations. The suspect was noted to be wearing an “all grey tracksuit, black hat, trainers, and a rucksack” at the time of the attack, as mentioned in a statement by the police.
The scene of the crime remained cordoned off throughout Saturday, with a police tent set up on the pavement outside the Bullring shopping centre. This location, situated opposite the main entrance to New Street, served as a stark reminder of the violent incident that occurred the previous evening.
